Admissions & Requirements

To be accepted to this program, you must have:

  1. A minimum of two years teaching experience.
  2. Minimum GPA of 3.0 in the last 60 hours of undergraduate education (if you do not already have a master’s degree).
  3. If English is not your native language, please submit a TOEFL score of at least 80 (internet-based test) or an IELTS score of at least 6.5.
  4. Transcripts of all previous college or university education. Upload unofficial transcripts in your online application. If you are accepted, you will be asked to provide official transcripts.
  5. Statement of purpose explaining why you wish to pursue a graduate certificate.
  6. TOEFL or IELTS score reports for applicants whose native language is not English.
  7. Two letters of recommendation. In the online application, you will need to supply names and contact details of two people, one academic and one professional source, who can attest to your professional competence, academic preparation and potential for graduate work. Graduate Studies will contact your references with instructions regarding the letters.

    Course will develop understanding of learning and teaching pre-number concepts, counting and cardinality, numbers and operations in base ten. Emphasis will be given to how children think about and learn these concepts and how they fit into the elementary school curriculum. Graded on A-F basis only. Corequisites: LTC 8881.

  • LTC 8872Teaching and Learning Rational Number Advanced3 Credits

    The course is designed to develop an understanding of the learning and teaching of rational numbers and the ratio and proportional relationships. Emphasis will be given to how children think about and learn these concepts and how they fit into the elementary school curriculum. Graded on A-F basis only. Corequisites: LTC 8882

  • LTC 8873Teaching and Learning Geometry and Measurement Advanced3 Credits

    This course is designed to develop and understanding of the teaching and learning of geometry and measurement. Emphasis will be given to how children think about and learn these concepts and how they fit into an elementary mathematics curriculum. Graded on an A-F basis only. Corequisites: LTC 8883.

  • LTC 8874Teaching and Learning Algebraic Reasoning Advanced3 Credits

    Course focuses on the content and complexities of teaching and assessing algebraic reasoning in grades 1-6. Includes examinations of representation, analysis of mathematical structures, patterns, functions, and the transition from arithmetic to algebra. Graded on A-F basis only. Corequisites: LTC 8884

  • LTC 8876Teaching Data Analysis and Mathematical Modeling3 Credits

    The course will develop understanding of data analysis and mathematical modeling. Emphasis will be given to how children think and learn about these concepts and how they fit into the elementary school curriculum. Graded on A-F basis only.

  • LTC 8877Foundations of Mathematics Leadership in Elem Schools 2 Credits

    This course provides opportunities for participants to develop knowledge and understanding of leadership principles and the process of continuous improvement as it related to the roles and responsibilities of elementary mathematics specialists. Graded on A-F basis only.

  • LTC 8878Mathematical Leadership for Elementary Schools Advanced3 Credits

    This advanced leadership course focuses on research and practice related to teamwork, interaction, communication, conflict resolution, and leadership in K-5 schools. Candidates will examine effective strategies for influencing and facilitating school/district improvement. Course graded on A-F basis only.

  • LTC 8881Internship - Number and Operations in Elementary Schools 1 Credit

    A supervised mathematics teaching practicum with online seminars in which the candidate acquires experience working with a range of students and adult learners (parents and teachers) on number and operations concepts. Graded on A-F basis only. Corequisites: LTC 8871
