Program structure and topics
Delivery of this program is blended: You will complete most course work online, but an on-campus visit is required for five days during the summer before course work begins for orientation to the DNP program. Additional campus visits will be required throughout the program.
Courses are semester-based. How long it takes to complete the program depends on your academic progress so far. If you already have a masters degree, you can study part time and complete the program in three years. If you have a bachelors degree and want to study part time, the program is more likely to take you five or six years.

To be accepted to this program, you must have:
Completed baccalaureate or master’s degree from a nationally accredited nursing program.
Minimum GPA of 3.5 for applicants with a master’s degree in nursing.
For applicants without a master’s degree, an average GPA of 3.3 in the last 60 hours of undergraduate nursing course work. Applicants who do not meet the minimum GPA requirements for their BSN or MS also may provide additional evidence documenting examples of outstanding professional leadership, practice and/or scholarship for special consideration.
If English is not your native language, please submit a TOEFL score of at least 80 (internet-based test), an IELTS score of at least 6.5, a Pearson Test of English (PTE) score of at least 59 or a Cambridge C1 Advanced score of at least 180.
Transcripts of all previous college or university education. Unofficial transcripts suffice for application; if you are accepted, you will be asked to provide official transcripts.
Additional evidence of your outstanding professional leadership, practice or scholarship for special consideration if you don’t meet the GPA requirements.
Essay (three to five pages) describing your professional goals and how participation in the DNP program will enhance these goals. Identify a topic or practice-based problem that you might address in your final, scholarly project. This project should be large enough to result in change at the organizational, system, regional or national level; new or revised state health policy; or the establishment of a significant new health-related service to a population or geographic region.

Three professional recommendations from master’s or doctorally prepared nurses or faculty members who can address your potential or ability to function in the advanced practice nursing role (i.e. clinical skills, critical thinking, independent decision making, collaboration and communication with other health professionals, and leadership abilities). If you are currently enrolled in a nursing program, submit at least one recommendation from a current faculty member in that program. Do not include recommendations from friends, fellow staff nurses or ministers. Submit names and contact details for recommendation providers within the online application.

Examines basic concepts of data management, study design, descriptive and inferential biostatistics using analytic software. Emphasizes statistical literacy and critical thinking for health researchers. Graded on A-F basis only.
Introduction to knowledge and skills essential to support research and practice doctorates. May be repeated for credit. Prerequisites: Admission to DNP or PhD program.
Analysis, application and evaluation of a variety of nursing and non nursing theories used in advanced nursing practice and research.
An overview of the advanced nursing practice role and professional issues. Provides foundational knowledge on which other advanced nursing courses will build. Prerequisites: Admission to the graduate program or faculty consent.
Focus on the normal and altered physiological functioning of body systems. Provides essential knowledge of human health and disease across the lifespan necessary for advanced nursing practice.
Advanced practice nurse drug therapy management for health maintenance and treatment of acute episodic and chronic health problems in various populations over the life span. Prerequisites: BSN or instructor's consent.
Expands history and physical assessment techniques across lifespan. Addresses diagnostic reasoning, differential diagnosis, selection of common diagnostic test, disease risk factors, and health promotion strategies. Prerequisites: BSN or instructor's consent.
Examines fundamentals of scientific inquiry. Addresses research design issues. Focuses on interpreting, critiquing, and synthesizing research findings. Prerequisites: NURSE 7100.
Explores key concepts of epidemiology and epidemiologic methods for studying the distribution and determinants of health and disease in populations. Application to public health and population-based practice addressed. Prerequisites: NURSE 7150 or faculty consent.
Explores concepts of public health with a focus on the advanced practice nurse in population-based/primary care practice; core public health functions will be addressed at three service levels--the aggregate, the family, and the individual. Prerequisites: NURSE 7100.
In-depth examination of rural and other vulnerable populations and their interactions with the health care system including access, utilization, and outcomes. May be repeated for credit. Prerequisites: NURSE 7087, NURSE 8300 or faculty consent.
Emphasis is on the neurobiologic basis and diagnosis of mental health problems and advanced nursing management of psychiatric conditions using pharmaceutical agents. Prerequisites: NURSE 7120, NURSE 7130 and NURSE 7140.
Develops advanced skills in assessment, treatment, and follow-up evaluation of individuals experiencing acute mental health problems. Emphasizes brief psychotherapy based on frameworks from nursing and other disciplines. Prerequisites: NURSE 8610.
Application of group and behavioral methods in mental health prevention, promotion, maintenance, and restoration. Designing, implementing, and evaluating mental health promotion groups and social skills training programs. Prerequisites: NURSE 8610.
Application of nursing and family theories in advanced nursing management of families experiencing a variety of problems. Emphasis on designing, implementing, and evaluating advanced nursing interventions for families. Prerequisites: NURSE 8620 or consent of instructor.
Develops advanced skills in psychiatric assessment and follow-up evaluation of children and adolescents experiencing mental health problems. Provides essential skills for utilizing research to support practice change: assessing practice based problems, analyzing current evidence, proposing practice changes, and developing plans for implementing evidence-based practice concepts. Prerequisites: NURSE 8100 or faculty consent.
Uses information systems to identify and analyze patient safety and other clinical issues and recommend system-wide actions and measurement plans that result in safe, effective, efficient, equitable, patient-centered outcomes. Prerequisites: NURSE 8910.
Designing, implementing and evaluating effective health programs. Addresses leadership and organizational change issues. Prerequisites: NURSE 8920 or instructor's consent.
Designed to explore and critically evaluate the role of nursing and nurse leaders/scholars in health policy development and the organization and financing of health care in response to the health and social needs of the public.
Intensive clinical experience. Prepare experts in advanced nursing practice and leadership to effectively evaluate practice problems, translate evidence into practice, monitor outcomes, and implement innovative models of care. This course will provide an overview of leadership theories and strategies for managing individuals, groups, or systems within rapidly changing healthcare environments. Examines principles, issues, techniques, and evaluation methods in teaching nursing. Focuses on the development of a variety of teaching strategies and evaluation methods for didactic and clinical settings. Prerequisites: NURSE 7100 and NURSE 7110 or instructor's consent.
This course will examine various organizational theories, organizational behavior, and the impact of change within organizations. Participants will apply and analyze workforce management principles in regard to employee rights, resources, and responsibilities. May be repeated for credit. Graded on an A-F basis only.
