Missouri certification option

If you already have your Missouri teaching certification, 15 hours of gifted course work in this program will meet Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) requirements for Missouri gifted education certification. You can take these courses without being admitted to the M Ed degree program; for full details about that option, visit the Gifted Education certification preparation page.

Admissions & Requirements

To be accepted to this program, you must have:

  1. Completed bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  2. Minimum GPA of 3.0 in the last 60 hours of undergraduate education.
  3. If English is not your native language, please submit a TOEFL score of at least 100 (internet-based test) or an IELTS score of at least 7.Application to this program does require you to submit GRE scores. If you have not taken the exam in the past five years, now is the time to do so.

  5. Transcripts of all previous college or university education. Upload unofficial transcripts in your online application. If you are accepted, you will be asked to provide official transcripts.
  6. Two letters of recommendation. In the online application, you will need to supply names and contact details of two people who can attest to your professional competence, academic preparation and potential for graduate work. Ideally, one letter should be from a professor who can discuss your academic abilities, the other from an administrator or colleague who can describe your professional experience and potential. Graduate Studies will contact your references with instructions regarding the letters.
  7. Personal data sheet.
  8. Statement of purpose (500 words) summarizing your professional goals, including career objectives, research interests, your motivation for graduate work and anything else you feel is important.
  9. Letter of intent briefly and clearly stating your interest, if any, in grant funding.

    A conceptual and empirical examination for educational personnel of student identification procedures, special populations, programming issues, research topics and teacher competencies. Prerequisites: instructor's consent.

  • SPC_ED 8391Curriculum Methods for Gifted and Talented Students3 Credits

    A theoretical examination for educational personnel of specific instructional approaches including structure of intellect, enrichment triad, empirical research, and creative problem solving. Prerequisites: SPC_ED 8380 or instructor's consent.

  • SPC_ED 8405Assessment and Evaluation in Gifted Education3 Credits

    Seminar focuses on practices for identifying students for gifted education programs, evaluation models applicable to school programs and strategies for grading and evaluation of gifted students. Prerequisites: SPC_ED 8380 or instructor's consent.

  • SPC_ED 8406Differentiating Instruction: Reaching Gifted, Typical and Struggling Learners3 Credits

    Explores various instructional approaches to help meet the learning needs of a range of learners from gifted through struggling and at-risk students. Graded on A-F basis only. Prerequisite: Introduction to Special Education; instructor's consent.
