Program structure and topics 

Course work is online but you will attend a two-day orientation the summer before you begin your course work. 

Course work covers, among others:

  • Safety and performance outcomes

Admissions & Requirements

To be accepted to this program, you must have:

  1. Baccalaureate or master’s degree nursing from a program accredited by a national organization responsible for nursing accreditation and by the Higher Learning Commission.
  2. A minimum GPA of 3.0 for the last 60 credit hours of undergraduate study.
  3. Current licensure as a registered nurse.
  4. Admission to this program requires GRE scores if your GPA is below 3.3. If you have not taken the GRE in the past five years, now is the time to do so.
  5. Successful completion of a graduate-level statistics course (e.g., STAT 7020).
  6. Transcripts of all previous college or university education. Upload unofficial transcripts in your online application. If you are accepted, you will be asked to provide official transcripts.
  7. Curriculum vitae documenting education, work experience, leadership, professional organization activities and scholarly endeavors (e.g. publications, presentations, research, honors, awards).
  8. Personal statement (typed, single-spaced) describing your professional goals and how participation in the MS program will help you achieve them. Please include the following: Summary of your clinical background/experiences as a registered nurse. Summary of your specific clinical experiences in your chosen specialty area (e.g. setting(s), responsibilities, and/or roles). Description of any work-related projects and/or professional committee involvement. Description of your population of interest (e.g. pediatrics, elderly, women, etc.), setting of interest (e.g. acute/critical care, primary care, school, health department, etc.) and, if applicable, sub-specialty interest area (e.g. diabetes, oncology, cardiology, etc.). Type of position you intend to pursue after graduation (e.g. teaching, administration, clinical practice, research, or other). Your long-term career goals.
  9. List of possible clinical preceptors/internship mentors: Please describe potential clinical sites to which you have access and names, credentials, roles and setting of potential preceptors/mentor(s) in your geographic area available to supervise clinical practicum or internship hours.
  10. Names and contact details for two professional references. These should be health care professionals who can evaluate your academic and/or professional abilities. One must be your most recent supervisor or manager who can evaluate your clinical, teaching, leadership, and/or administrative abilities. The other should be a health care professional (e.g. nursing instructor, supervisor, clinical preceptor or advanced practice nurse, etc.) with whom you have worked and/or collaborated within the past two years. Do not include recommendations from friends, fellow staff nurses or ministers. Submit names and contact details for recommendation providers within the online application.
  11. TOEFL or IELTS score reports for applicants whose native language is not English.
  12. Copies of current, unencumbered registered nurse license(s).
  13. Additionally the department may request you to undergo a personal interview.

    Analysis, application and evaluation of a variety of nursing and non nursing theories used in advanced nursing practice and research.

  • NURSE 7110Advanced Nursing Role Acquisition3 Credits

    An overview of the advanced nursing practice role and professional issues. Provides foundational knowledge on which other advanced nursing courses will build. Prerequisites: Admission to the graduate program or faculty consent.

  • NURSE 7150Research Basis for Advanced Nursing3 Credits

    Examines fundamentals of scientific inquiry. Addresses research design issues. Focuses on interpreting, critiquing, and synthesizing research findings. Prerequisites: NURSE 7100.

  • NURSE 8042Health News and Promotion3 Credits

    This is an advanced seminar that examines and critiques the literature on health communication in news about health and its impact and health promotion campaigns.

  • NURSE 8300Public Health and Sociocultural Issues3 Credits

    Explores concepts of public health with a focus on the advanced practice nurse in population-based/primary care practice; core public health functions will be addressed at three service levels--the aggregate, the family, and the individual. Prerequisites: NURSE 7100.

  • NURSE 8820Health Care Financial Management3 Credits

    Prepares nurses to use the techniques that facilitate financial analysis and decision-making for patient care programs across the healthcare continuum. Focuses on efficient, effective management of resources for delivery of quality healthcare services. Prerequisites: NURSE 7100

  • NURSE 8860Organizations & Human Resource Management in Nursing3 Credits

    This course will examine various organizational theories, organizational behavior, and the impact of change within organizations. Participants will apply and analyze workforce management principles in regard to employee rights, resources, and responsibilities. May be repeated for credit. Graded on an A-F basis only. Prerequisites: NURSE 7087 or instructors consent.

  • NURSE 8910Translational Evidence-Based Nursing Practice3 Credits

    Provides essential skills for utilizing research to support practice change: assessing practice based problems, analyzing current evidence, proposing practice changes, and developing plans for implementing evidence-based practice concepts. Prerequisites: NURSE 8100 or faculty consent.

  • NURSE 8920Quality, Safety, and Performance Outcomes3 Credits

    Uses information systems to identify and analyze patient safety and other clinical issues and recommend system-wide actions and measurement plans that result in safe, effective, efficient, equitable, patient-centered outcomes. Prerequisites: NURSE 8910.

  • NURSE 8940Nursing and Health Policy3 Credits

    Designed to explore and critically evaluate the role of nursing and nurse leaders/scholars in health policy development and the organization and financing of health care in response to the health and social needs of the public.

  • NURSE 8960Leadership in Nursing and Healthcare Systems Practicum3 Credits

    Participation in application of principles and methods of leadership, management, and evaluation to facilitate patient care operations in various settings. Graded on an S/U basis only. Prerequisites: NURSE 8800, NURSE 8810, NURSE 8820.

  • NURSE 9455Formative and Summative Evaluation3 Credits

    Study of the process of gathering data and making judgments about the effectiveness of instructional programs that uses technology. Covers techniques of a formative evaluation process to revise instruction. Culminating project is planning and conducting a portion of a summative evaluation of instructional program.

  • NURSE 9458Technology and Assessment3 Credits

    Learn how to assess specific types of knowledge, using technology to enhance the process. Topics include use of tools/strategies for data collection to guide instructional decision-making and investigating technologies to improve assessment of student learning. Emphasis on aligning learning objectives, activities, and assessments and developing performance assessments to measure higher-order thinking. Graded on A-F basis only.

    Strategies for integrating technology into the teaching and learning process, with a focus on enhancing how students think rather than what they think. Special attention given to supporting higher order thinking and problem solving with technology.

    In-depth analysis of innovation development and adoption processes in educational organizations, including schools, universities, and training centers.

  • STAT 7020Statistical Methods in the Health Sciences3 Credits

    Basic inference methods, both parametric and non-parametric, appropriate for answering questions arising in health sciences research. Computer exercises involving data from real experiments from health science area. Prerequisites: MATH 1100 or MATH 1120 and instructor's consent.
