Program structure and topics 

Courses are semester-based. Students typically take one or two classes each semester, including summers, and finish in two years.

  • Communicating with parents, children and school personnel 
  • Diversity issues in schools 
  • Evaluating and implementing evidence-based programs

Admissions & Requirements

To be accepted to this program, you must have:

  1. Completed master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  2. Minimum GPA of 3.0 in the last 60 hours of undergraduate education.
  3. If English is not your native language, please submit a TOEFL score of at least 80 (internet-based test) or an IELTS score of at least 6.5.
  4. Transcripts of all previous college or university education. Upload unofficial transcripts in your online application. If you are accepted, you will be asked to provide official transcripts.
  5. Personal statement (up to 1,000 words) describing your experience in teaching, helping or counseling; your interests and career objectives and how these interests and career objectives have developed; how the program will benefit your career and help you act upon your beliefs, goals and philosophy. Include interests, leadership roles, experience working with diverse groups, or other skills or experiences that distinguish you as a candidate for graduate study.
  6. Three letters of recommendation. In the online application, you will need to supply names and contact details of three people who can attest to your professional competence, academic preparation and potential for graduate work. Graduate Studies will contact your references with instructions regarding the letters.
  7. Résumé or CV.

    Investigates aspects of human development that affect classroom learning. Topics include parenting style, divorce, friendship, mental health, attachment, play aggression, culture, and media. Graded on A-F basis only.

  • ESC_PS 7460Foundations of School Mental Health3 Credits

    Explores the history, foundations, and implementation of an expanded framework of school mental health focusing on collaborative and interdisciplinary approaches to supporting the wellness and school success of youth. Introduces professional working in or with schools to the school mental health framework emphasizing a behavioral health continuum of care, links between mental health and academic performance, a comprehensive system of learning supports, and data-based decision-making.

  • ESC_PS 8020Overview of Research Methods3 Credits

    Survey of research design and methods of data collection for masters, educational specialists, and doctoral students. Prerequisites: ESC_PS 7170 or instructor's consent.

  • ESC_PS 8490Mental Health in Schools Capstone Paper1 Credit

    Course focuses on writing a capstone integration paper that is intended to be a culminating experience. Allows students to reflect on the content of their course work, evaluate the knowledge and skills acquired, and apply what they have learned into their professional practice. Prerequisites: instructor's consent
