Program structure and topics

Delivery of this program is blended: You will complete most course work online, but an on-campus visit is required for five days during the summer before course work begins for orientation to the DNP program. An additional campus visit will be required at the end of the program.

Courses are semester-based. How long it takes to complete the program depends on your academic progress so far. Most students complete the program program in three years.

Admissions & Requirements

To be accepted to this program, you must have:

  1. Baccalaureate or master's degree in nursing from a program accredited by a national organization responsible for nursing accreditation or related field for DNP leadership students. Your degree also must be from a regionally accredited program from the Higher Learning Commission.
  2. Minimum GPA of 3.5 for applicants with a master’s degree in nursing. Applicants who do not meet the minimum GPA requirements for their BSN or MS also may provide additional evidence documenting examples of outstanding professional leadership, practice and/or scholarship for special consideration.
  3. If English is not your native language, please submit a TOEFL score of at least 80 (internet-based test) or an IELTS score of at least 6.5.
  4. Transcripts of all previous college or university education. Unofficial transcripts suffice for application; if you are accepted, you will be asked to provide official transcripts.
  5. Additional evidence of your outstanding professional leadership, practice or scholarship for special consideration if you don’t meet the GPA requirements.
  6. Essay (three to five pages) describing your professional goals and how participation in the DNP program will enhance these goals. Identify a topic or practice-based problem that you might address in your final, scholarly project. This project should be large enough to result in change at the organizational, system, regional or national level; new or revised state health policy; or the establishment of a significant new health-related service to a population or geographic region.
  7. Copies of current, unencumbered registered nurse license(s.)
  8. Copies of all advanced practice nursing certification and/or credentialing/recognition documents (for applicants with masters’ degrees).
  9. Verification of clinical hours from previous MSN and/or certificate programs.
  10. Curriculum vitae documenting education, work experience, leadership, professional organization activities and scholarly endeavors (e.g. publications, presentations, research, honors, awards).
  11. Three professional recommendations from master’s or doctorally prepared nurses or faculty members who can address your potential or ability to function in the advanced practice nursing role (i.e. clinical skills, critical thinking, independent decision making, collaboration and communication with other health professionals, and leadership abilities).
  12. If you are currently enrolled in a nursing program, submit at least one recommendation from a current faculty member in that program. Do not include recommendations from friends, fellow staff nurses or ministers. Submit names and contact details for recommendation providers within the online application.

    Prepares nurses to use the techniques that facilitate financial analysis and decision-making for patient care programs across the healthcare continuum. Focuses on efficient, effective management of resources for delivery of quality healthcare services. Prerequisites: NURSE 7100

  • NURSE 8830Informatics Applications and Innovations in Health Care Systems3 Credits

    This course explores informatics from the perspective of health related fields through technology assessment and evaluation, and research and development in technological innovations. The impact of technology on patient privacy will also be examined. Graded on A-F basis only. Prerequisites: NURSE 7087 or instructor's consent.

    This course will provide an overview of leadership theories and strategies for managing individuals, groups, or systems within rapidly changing healthcare environments. Innovative and cutting edge phenomena in healthcare will be explored as well as entrepreneurship. May be repeated for credit. Graded on A-F basis only. Prerequisites: NURSE 7087 or instructors consent.

  • NURSE 8860Organizations & Human Resource Management in Nursing3 Credits

    This course will examine various organizational theories, organizational behavior, and the impact of change within organizations. Participants will apply and analyze workforce management principles in regard to employee rights, resources, and responsibilities. May be repeated for credit. Graded on an A-F basis only. Prerequisites: NURSE 7087 or instructors consent.

  • NURSE 8910Translational Evidence-Based Nursing Practice3 Credits

    Provides essential skills for utilizing research to support practice change: assessing practice based problems, analyzing current evidence, proposing practice changes, and developing plans for implementing evidence-based practice concepts. Prerequisites: NURSE 8100 or faculty consent.

    Uses information systems to identify and analyze patient safety and other clinical issues and recommend system-wide actions and measurement plans that result in safe, effective, efficient, equitable, patient-centered outcomes. Prerequisites: NURSE 8910.

    Designing, implementing and evaluating effective health programs. Addresses leadership and organizational change issues. Prerequisites: NURSE 8920 or instructor's consent.

    Designed to explore and critically evaluate the role of nursing and nurse leaders/scholars in health policy development and the organization and financing of health care in response to the health and social needs of the public.

    Intensive clinical experience. Prepare experts in advanced nursing practice and leadership to effectively evaluate practice problems, translate evidence into practice, monitor outcomes, and implement innovative models of care.   • NURSE 8300Public Health and Sociocultural Issues3 Credits

    Explores concepts of public health with a focus on the advanced practice nurse in population-based/primary care practice; core public health functions will be addressed at three service levels--the aggregate, the family, and the individual. Prerequisites: NURSE 7100.

  • NURSE 8310Health Disparities of Rural and Other Underserved Populations3 Credits

    In-depth examination of rural and other vulnerable populations and their interactions with the health care system including access, utilization, and outcomes. May be repeated for credit. Prerequisites: NURSE 7087, NURSE 8300 or faculty consent.

  • NURSE 8854Teaching Strategies in Nursing3 Credits

    Examines principles, issues, techniques, and evaluation methods in teaching nursing. Focuses on the development of a variety of teaching strategies and evaluation methods for didactic and clinical settings. Prerequisites: NURSE 7100 and NURSE 7110 or instructor's consent.

  • NURSE 8864Curriculum Development in Nursing3 Credits

    Examines theoretical foundations, principles, and issues in curriculum design. Explores systematic evaluation of curriculum at all levels. Prerequisites: NURSE 7100 and NURSE 7110 or instructor's consent.
