This program is offered as part of Great Plains IDEA, which is a partnership of multiple public universities offering fully online degree programs. Students apply to and are admitted by one university, enroll in all of their courses through that university and graduate from that university. However, the online courses are taught by faculty in the discipline from several universities. All students pay one common price no matter where each of the classes is based.

Admissions & Requirements

To be accepted to this program, you must have:

  1. Completed bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  2. Minimum GPA of 3.0 in the last 60 hours of undergraduate education.
  3. If English is not your native language, please submit a TOEFL score of at least 100 (internet-based test).
  4. Transcripts of all previous college or university education. Upload unofficial transcripts in your online application. If you are accepted, you will be asked to provide official transcripts.
  5. Three letters of recommendation from three professionals who can attest to your critical thinking, analytical and writing skills, demonstrating your potential as a graduate student and professional.
  6. Résumé or CV.
  7. Statement of purpose outlining your career goals.

    Issues and concepts related to the financial planning process, including determination of financial goals and expectations and analysis and evaluation of personal and family financial data with emphasis on savings, insurance, investments, taxes, credit and financial aspects of housing.

  • FIN_PLN 7187Financial Planning: Tax Planning3 Credits

    (cross-leveled with FINPLN 4187). Principles, current law and practice of income taxation and its impact on personal financial planning for individuals, couples and families in their roles as investors, employees, and business owners. Graded on A-F basis only. Prerequisites: FINPLN 2183; FINPLN 3283 or ACCTCY 2258 or equivalent or instructor's consent.

  • FIN_PLN 7382Financial Planning: Risk Management3 Credits

    Analysis of family financial risks and conservation of family assets via risk management, with primary focus on personal lines of insurance. Prerequisites: FINPLN 3283; 5-6 hours of Economics; STAT 1300 or STAT 2500.

  • FIN_PLN 7383Financial Planning: Investment Management3 Credits

    Management of family financial investments. Prerequisites:FINPLN 2183; FINPLN 3283 or ACCTCY 2258; STAT 2500 or STAT 1300 and STAT 2200 or STAT 1400 and STAT 2200 or STAT 1200 and STAT 2200. Restricted to Personal Financial Planning emphasis area with a 2. 5 cumulative gpa or higher; restricted to Personal Financial Management Services emphasis area with a 2.0 cumulative gpa or higher; restricted to Financial Counseling emphasis area with a 2.25 cumulative gpa; or instructor consent. Prerequisites or Corequisites: ECONOM 3229.

    Fundamentals of employee benefits and retirement planning. Consideration of options via government, employer, financial markets. Special circumstances of women, part-time, and contingent workers considered. Prerequisites: FINPLN 4382, FINPLN 4383, or instructor's consent.

    Fundamentals, practical problems and solutions in basic estate and gift planning, business succession planning, and taxation issues. Prerequisites: FINPLN 4382 and FINPLN 4382.
