The world's oldest journalism school is at your fingertips with this online master of arts degree in strategic communication that is based on five principles: strategic planning, technology, relationship building, a global/multicultural perspective and a communications toolbox. The curriculum focuses primarily on theory and research. The program will help you improve your critical thinking skills and develop strategies for communication problems.

On-campus leadership seminar

This program requires you to attend one on-campus experience on the Mizzou campus over a long weekend in the fall of your first year. You may choose to attend this up to three times during the duration of your program. You also will be expected to come to campus to defend your master's thesis.

Admissions & Requirements

To be accepted to this program, you must have:

  1. Completed bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  2. Minimum of three years of experience in journalism or a strategic communications-related field.
  3. Minimum GPA of 3.0 in the last 60 hours of undergraduate education.
  4. Application to this program does require GRE scores. Successful applicants generally have scores in the range of 153–160 (verbal) and 144–148 (quantitative).
  5. If English is not your native language, please submit a TOEFL score of at least 100 (internet-based test) or an IELTS score of at least 7.
  6. Transcripts of all previous college or university education. Upload unofficial transcripts in your online application. If you are accepted, you will be asked to provide official transcripts.
  7. Three application essays.
  8. Three letters of recommendation. In the online application, you will need to supply names and contact details of three people (e.g., faculty at your school, professional references) who you believe will provide substantive information about your interests and abilities. Graduate Studies will contact your references with instructions regarding the letters.
  9. Résumé.

    Course is designed to introduce graduate students to common qualitative approaches applicable to the study of journalism and mass communication. Students will learn a variety of approaches, practical methodologies and tools that will help them conduct research.

    Introduces the latest principles of strategic communication and the importance of strategic planning in many contemporary communication fields. A significant operational component in the course introduces skills such as budgeting, scheduling objective-setting, organizing personal time, and managing people.

    Strategic conflict management is a cross-disciplinary study that integrated organizational behavior, crisis management, conflict resolution and image repair. This course melds theory with practice, and is for those venturing into media management, law, and strategic communication.
